Dedicated Server vs. VPS Hosting - which is better for my project?

A Dedicated Server, also known as a Root Server or Dedicated Server, and a Virtual Private Server, also known as VPS hosting or VPS, offer a similar IT environment with an individual operating system, but differ significantly in technical aspects.

The advantages and disadvantages of both solutions should be considered before making a choice, in order to avoid subsequent difficulties or a time-consuming and labor-intensive migration from one system to another. The differences primarily involve resources and costs, but can also have implications in other areas.

What does the term Dedicated Server refer to?

The term Dedicated Server is a direct translation of the English term Dedicated Server, which stands for hardware assigned and dedicated to a customer. This means specifically that a dedicated server provides the user with their own computer located in a data centre with redundant internet connectivity. The hardware of a Dedicated Server consists of a complete computer system including memory, a processor, drives, and a casing, and is exclusively allocated to a single individual - effectively renting a physical computer for exclusive use.

A dedicated server uses high-quality components such as a special CPU with multiple cores and ECC RAM, which has integrated error control and correction. This makes it an exceptionally powerful and reliable system with some special features:

• Free choice of operating system
• Full access to the hardware up to drive partitioning
• Consistently guaranteed performance and network bandwidth
• Technical support and hardware monitoring by the provider
• Individual use for commercial and private purposes
• Comparatively high costs and long contract terms
• Scalability through different processors, RAM, and drives
• Optional additional hardware such as graphics cards for AI applications

A dedicated server is often referred to as a Dedicated Server as well, as it allows the user exclusive access as an administrator (Root). However, this term is somewhat misleading because VPS hosting or Cloud Server also allow Root access to the operating system.

What is a VPS hosting?

A VPS hosting also runs on a dedicated server, but is isolated from its primary operating system through virtualisation. This is a process where a dedicated server either simulates the hardware for multiple operating systems (full virtualisation) or allows multiple operating systems access to a collective hardware under a single core system (kernel). With a VPS hosting, multiple users share the resources of a dedicated server and use them collectively, with each of them guaranteed a fixed computing power (e.g. a specific number of vCores) as a minimum.

As a result, VPS hosting offers many advantages similar to those of a Dedicated Server, but due to the shared hardware, they come with significantly lower costs. However, this also means that they have lower performance and this can be further affected, for example, by simultaneous peak loads on multiple VPS hosting servers. The characteristics of VPS hosting therefore include:

• Low costs with sometimes short contract terms
• Full access to the operating system
• Free choice of operating system only possible with full virtualisation
• Continuous high resource consumption can be excluded by providers
• Scalability and configuration limited by external factors
• Quick setup possible within minutes
• High availability and a very extensive range

An alternative to Dedicated Servers with higher performance than VPS hosting are Cloud Servers, which, like VPS hosting, are based on virtualisation, but here it is carried out in extremely powerful IT networks. However, when selecting Cloud Servers, additional factors must still be taken into account.

What are the advantages of VPS hosting and Dedicated Servers?

For professional websites with high traffic, as well as for experimental environments or hardware outsourcing, a dedicated server is recommended as it offers all the benefits of dedicated hardware without requiring costly investments in components.

On the other hand, VPS hosting is suitable for simple tasks such as hosting small to medium websites or as an email server, offering similar functionality at a significantly lower price point.

A particular challenge that necessitates comparing Cloud Servers vs. VPS hosting or Dedicated Servers is temporary computationally intensive usage - such as for gaming servers or video conferencing portals. It should also be noted that some providers already offer dedicated servers at affordable prices, but their availability is comparatively low because maintaining the hardware for potential requests - unlike with a VPS hosting - incurs high ongoing costs and investments.
