The domain extension ORG is the third generic domain of the well-known and first introduced TLDs. An overview of the domain costs of all ORG domain providers can be found in our comparison table.
With over 10 million registrations to date, this domain extension is one of the most commonly used generic TLDs. The ORG extension was introduced on 1st January 1985 along with the other two top-level domains COM and NET.
The abbreviation ORG stands for "Organisation" and was originally introduced as an alternative for non-commercial organisations. Although this restriction has since been lifted and anyone can order an ORG domain, the extension remains particularly popular for non-commercial projects. It is especially favoured in the realm of open-source applications and free software projects. The first ORG domain, www.mitre.org, was registered in July 1985. The domain is owned by the American non-profit organisation Mitre, which played a significant role in the development of the Internet.
Allocation Policies of ORG Domains
The technical allocation of the domain is managed by the Public Interest Registry (PIR). This organisation was established for this purpose in 2002 as a non-profit organisation. Prior to that, the domain was managed by the company VeriSign, which is also responsible for allocating the COM and NET domains. As part of a market liberalisation, ICANN decided that VeriSign should not have a monopoly on all three of the most important web addresses, and therefore the management was transferred to PIR. Today, the Public Interest Registry, along with VeriSign and DENIC, is one of the three largest domain name registrars worldwide. Since there are price differences between individual registrars, it is advisable to compare the costs of different NET domain providers before registering. Like with each of the three CNO domains, there are no strict allocation guidelines for the ORG domain. The domain extension can be registered for any purpose by any natural or legal person. The name can consist of 2 to 63 characters, including German umlauts. The domain name can also contain hyphens, as long as they do not appear at the beginning or end.
As the third most common generic domain extension, the ORG domain is highly recognisable. Due to its association with non-profit organisations, the domain still maintains a good reputation among internet users. Therefore, the ending of the ORG domain providers in our comparison is particularly suitable for non-commercial projects, such as the websites of associations and organisations. For traditional online projects in the German language targeting a German-speaking audience, the DE domain is generally preferred.
