Since when has the .online domain been available?

The .online extension is among the new Top Level Domains introduced by the regulatory authority ICANN since the end of 2013. One of the key reasons for this decision was the continuous increase in demand for internet addresses. As only a limited number of new domains are released within a calendar year, the public release for .online took place on August 26, 2015. More than half of the allocated domains are preemptively registered and parked as potentially interesting addresses.

How much does a .online address cost?

Some providers offer .online URLs at a very affordable price, sometimes significantly below 1 euro per month. As part of special offers, costs may even be waived for up to 12 months. However, these offers usually come with a longer contract commitment, resulting in practical costs starting from around 1.50 euros per month. Compared to other Top Level Domains, .online is definitely one of the cheapest options and is therefore equally attractive for individuals and businesses.

What's behind the new Top Level Domains?

Moreover, the old system with country-specific extensions no longer serves its original purpose, as local content has increasingly shifted to foreign and international domains. In contrast, .online and other new URLs are independent of location and purpose, and can be freely used for both commercial and private applications.

Advantages:

  • Very cost-effective
  • Widespread availability
  • Universally usable for private and commercial purposes
  • Offered by many providers
  • General extension for activities on the internet

Disadvantages:

  • In many cases, long-term contract commitments
  • Many parked domains
  • No clear association with a region or industry
  • Rising prices from the second year onwards

What alternatives are there to the .online domain?

For many purposes, a .online domain is a good choice as it is both cost-effective and non-specific. This is especially true if the exact nature of a project is not yet clearly defined or if variable content is offered. However, older TLDs such as .org, .net, or .info may also be of interest due to their brevity and comparatively lower fees, which also allow for unrestricted use. For regional offerings, relevant extensions that allow for location identification and increase visibility to potential interested parties are generally recommended.

Alternatives to the .online Domain

There are a variety of domain extensions that serve as alternatives to the .online domain. For classic websites, the .website domain is interesting, while the .app domain is particularly suitable for online applications. However, the .web domain or .digital domain are also excellent choices for the web and e-business sector.
