    Which metrics are used to assess performance?

    To determine which provider can claim to be Germany's fastest web host, we analysed various performance metrics in detail, such as Time-to-First-Byte (TTFB), Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and PageSpeed.

     

    Performance metric: Time-to-First-Byte (TTFB)

    Time-to-First-Byte (TTFB) measures the time that elapses until the browser receives the first byte of data from the server after a request is made. This metric includes DNS resolution, connection setup and the server response time. A low TTFB value is an indicator of a fast and responsive server, which significantly improves loading speed and thus user experience and search engine ranking. Factors such as server performance, network infrastructure and efficient backend programming affect TTFB.

    Performance metric: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

    Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is a key metric for measuring a webpage's loading performance and indicates how long it takes for the largest visible element in the user's viewport to load completely. These elements can include images, videos or large blocks of text. LCP is particularly important because it reflects the perceived loading speed of a page from the user's perspective, directly affecting the user experience. Factors that influence LCP include server speed, client-side rendering processes and the size of the elements to be loaded.

    Performance metric: Page speed

    Page speed is a comprehensive metric that assesses a website's performance in terms of its loading speed and usability. It is measured using tools that analyse various aspects of website performance. A high page speed score indicates a fast-loading and user-friendly website, which enhances the user experience and positively affects SEO ranking. Optimisations to improve page speed can include reducing server response time, compressing images, minimising JavaScript and using caching techniques.

    How was the performance of the web hosts tested?

    The performance tests were carried out according to our test criteria in a standardised environment to produce comparable and reproducible results. Each website was built on an identical WordPress installation, with minimal adjustments and without additional plugins, to measure the host's baseline performance. The tests were performed multiple times at different times of day to account for fluctuations in server load and network latency.

    To measure the speed and performance of the web hosts, several established tools were used:

    • Google PageSpeed Insights: The tool evaluates a website’s performance on both desktop and mobile devices. It analyses various performance aspects such as load time, responsiveness and best practices and gives a score from 0 to 100. This analysis is based on the metrics of the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) and uses Google Lighthouse for in‑depth performance assessment.
    • Pingdom: This tool is used to measure page load speed, as it provides simple, user‑friendly reports and insights into performance from different locations worldwide. It measures load time, number of requests and page size, and offers detailed insights into the performance of each resource on the page.
    • Uptrends Website Speed Test: A tool that measures a website’s load speed and performance from various global locations. It provides detailed insights into the load times of individual elements, Time‑to‑First‑Byte (TTFB) and allows results to be analysed from different perspectives.

    The results of these tools were aggregated and analysed to assess the overall performance of each web host. The measurements focused on key metrics such as TTFB, LCP and the overall PageSpeed score.
