There are several ways to publish a website on the internet: the two most popular options are web hosting or a dedicated server. The costs between the two now differ only marginally in the mid-price segment, while the workload and the requirements for your own knowledge are significantly different. The question of "Is having your own server worthwhile?" often arises, especially in the initial phase of projects - the answer depends on many different conditions. Several factors should be considered before making a decision.

Limitations of Web Hosting

With web hosting, the user is restricted to the predefined services - typically one or more databases, a specified web server, PHP or Java Script, and depending on the hosting, possibly additional programming languages like Perl or Python. They can only utilise the predefined framework and have limited control over the environment. The restrictions range from the use of ports - such as Port 8080 for special services or experimental purposes instead of the standard Port 80 for websites - to software. While in some cases within web hosting it may be allowed to install and use software on a local account, many programs like a specific web server require further permissions.

With your own server, all these restrictions are lifted - the user becomes the administrator, has full access to the operating system, and can determine the installed software.

The Difference Between Virtual, Dedicated, and Managed Servers

There are several types of servers that differ significantly in their characteristics. The greatest freedom is certainly offered by a dedicated server - in this case, it is a complete, physically existing server with corresponding hardware. In the case of a Virtual Private Server (VPS hosting), on the other hand, numerous computers are "simulated" as virtual machines within a powerful server. They have to share its resources such as memory. A Managed Server simplifies management for the customer. It is maintained by the provider, who ensures regular updates and usually also takes care of the configuration. In this scenario, little or no specific knowledge is required for administration.

The Costs of a Dedicated Server

The costs of a server increase significantly when opting for a dedicated server. This means that an exclusive computer is provided solely for one individual customer. In contrast, VPS hosting costs only a fraction of a dedicated server. As numerous VPS hosting instances share the same hardware, the costs are also distributed. Even with comparable performance, VPS hosting is much more cost-effective, as it can be assumed that all instances will never be fully utilized at the same time.

Security with a Dedicated Server

Securing and precisely configuring a server requires specific expertise and regular software updates. The complexity between the deployed content, software, and operating system is primarily problematic in this context. Therefore, having a dedicated server is only advisable if its security can be guaranteed. This involves managing and configuring a variety of services - from the mail server to the web server and file transfers such as through the FTP protocol.
