Wix Templates - All Features Overview
Create an attractive website with a well-balanced design in just a few minutes - initially, this sounds more like a nice dream than reality. However, this dream can indeed become a reality when, as presented in our Wix Test, artificial intelligence comes into play. But even without it, customers can certainly find a suitable template among the now over 600 Wix Templates.
Convenient website builder with numerous Wix Templates
Wix.com has been offering its website builder for custom online presence since 2006 and has been expanding rapidly and consistently since at least 2010. It is now one of the most popular providers of homepage builders, which gradually, due to their ease of use and high flexibility, are pushing back the dominant Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress or Joomla. A special feature of Wix is its intuitive approach with a consistent drag-and-drop system for operation and a variety of design templates.
Wix presents designs in a well-organised manner
One of Wix's great strengths in templates is certainly the clear assignment of design templates according to their purpose and easy findability. The selection is divided into a total of 16 main categories such as Blogs & Forums, Landing Pages, Photography, or online presences for businesses, individuals, or online shops. These are further divided into subcategories, with Wix designs for specific industries, situations, and purposes, allowing users to quickly find examples suitable for their needs. In each category, there are about five to ten additional options with an average of between five and twenty design templates to choose from. If no suitable options are found, users can start with a blank page instead.
Interactive customisation of Wix Templates
Customers can customise Wix designs to their requirements and have the freedom to design and place their elements as they wish. They use the graphical "Pixel Perfect" editor for post-processing, allowing users to arrange all components precisely and without restrictions on the website. Editing the code is unnecessary, as customers can set all properties of the design templates online through menus and dragging in their browser. This approach offers significant advantages and only a few disadvantages.
Differences from other builders
The exact and pixel-perfect placement will certainly appeal to perfectionists and artists, but the total design freedom does not necessarily simplify the creation of a website from Wix designs. Providers like the model compared in our Wix vs. Jimdo review use grids instead, where elements snap into place. This allows for quicker and more reliable precise positioning at the same height, avoiding small, hard-to-see deviations. Apart from this structural approach, Wix has a feature that few competitors currently offer but is likely to become more widespread in the long term: artificial intelligence calculates individual design templates.
Artificial Intelligence creates Wix designs from minimal input
The virtual assistant is called Wix ADI and offers its help at the beginning of the creation process. When selecting this option, it asks a few short questions about the purpose, industry, theme, and required features, and calculates individual design templates based on these specifications. Subsequently, the customer has the option to apply these to different main styles and several Wix templates to quickly try out different variations. If they choose one of the generated Wix designs, they can make corrections at the final step, such as adjusting fonts, moving elements, changing colours, or adding apps.
Advantages of Wix templates
In its history, Wix has excelled at recognising trends early and continuously expanding its range of design templates. The high specialisation in some themes allows beginners to have a comfortable and easy start, and many useful, industry-specific apps like reservation systems for tables or rooms make Wix designs universally applicable. Some key advantages include:
- Large selection of universal and specialised Wix Templates
- Convenient, clear operation
- Customisation possible
- Artificial intelligence creates tailored design templates
- Plugins and apps seamlessly integrate into Wix designs
- Support for animations and interactive content
Disadvantages of Wix Designs
Wix undoubtedly gets a lot right with its design templates, and it's no surprise that the company has established itself as one of the market leaders in the competitive market. However, Wix templates are not perfect, with one criticism standing out: they are only limitedly responsive - designed for display on different devices. Here are the main disadvantages:
- Responsive design needs manual optimisation
- No option to switch between templates later
- No access to HTML or CSS source code
- No support for external templates
Conclusion: Lots of Pros with a Few Cons
Overall, Wix templates offer a quick, direct, and comfortable entry point, which even novices will find easy to use. Thanks to the numerous design templates and apps, professional and sometimes highly specialised websites can be created quickly, without customers having to worry about technical issues. However, they must accept some minor drawbacks - including the limitations of responsive design in the standard configuration, which are no longer very up-to-date. It is also important for commercial projects to note that by using Wix designs, they are committing long-term to the company - migrating along with the design templates to another provider is impossible.
