Rent Plesk Licenses: Affordable Providers Compared

Rent Plesk license variantsManaging a web server is hardly manageable for laypeople without tools. Since most servers like Apache or Nginx can only be accessed through the operating system's console by default, knowledge of the corresponding console commands is essential. This issue can be resolved by using a graphical control panel like Plesk. However, to use the panel, users must first rent a Plesk license or use a web hosting service with an integrated license. The additional costs for the license can quickly pay off through more efficient server maintenance.

What is Plesk?

Plesk is a software for server management, primarily designed for the administration of web hosting servers or complex web applications. Introduced for the first time in 2020 by the developer company Plesk Inc., the system has continuously evolved and is now one of the most popular solutions among web hosting providers, developers, and administrators.

Plesk offers a graphical, web-based user interface known as the Plesk Panel. Through this interface, the software provides numerous functions. Users hosting their web projects on Windows, Linux, or Unix operating systems benefit from the following features with Plesk:

  • Server Management: Plesk allows for the administration of web servers at various levels. Users can configure the operating system, server services, emails, or databases.
  • Website Management: With Plesk, users can create and edit websites. The software supports domain setup, file uploads, and the implementation of security measures such as SSL certificates.
  • Application Management: The software facilitates the easy installation and configuration of web applications like WordPress, Joomla!, and Magento.
  • User Management: The control panel provides tools to create and manage different user accounts. Additionally, administrators can assign specific rights to these accounts.
  • Updates and Security: Plesk includes features that enable automatic updating of server software.
  • Backup Solution: With Plesk, websites can be backed up and restored, which is crucial in case of data loss.
  • Analysis Tools: The panel displays statistics and data on server performance and website usage.
  • Resource Management: Plesk allows for monitoring system resources such as CPU, RAM, and disk space. This helps administrators determine if resources are being utilised efficiently.
  • Integration with Third-Party Providers: Plesk offers interfaces for integration with third-party providers, including cloud hosting services like Amazon Web Service, Alibaba Cloud, and Google Cloud Platform.

Essentially, the software is designed for complex web servers. Renting a Plesk license is therefore primarily worthwhile for medium-sized companies, corporations, or organisations that require an extensive IT architecture with different user and application layers.

Private users or freelancers are usually better off with web hosting products that integrate the user interface.

Which Plesk license to rent?

Plesk is offered in three different licenses that vary significantly in terms of performance and price. Users looking to rent a Plesk license should carefully consider the services they require. The following three options are available to them:

Web Admin Edition

This Plesk license is primarily aimed at end customers. It allows managing up to 10 domains, integrating free SSL certificates from Let's Encrypt, and creating websites using the WordPress Toolkit. Additionally, this license includes the mobile Plesk Manager for smartphones. Overall, the functionality of the Web Admin Edition is very limited and is only recommended for smaller advertising projects.

Web Pro Edition

This Plesk license is designed for SMEs or organisations that require an extended IT infrastructure. With the Web Pro Edition, you can manage up to 30 domains, add subscribers and user accounts. Furthermore, this Plesk license includes DNSSEC. The acronym stands for Domain Name System Security Extensions, a set of DNS protocol extensions introduced by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) to sign DNS data and secure the domain name resolution process.

Web Host Edition

With the Web Host Edition, Plesk Inc. specifically targets customers who want to rent webspace to their own clients. This Plesk license is ideal for web hosting providers. Administrators can manage an unlimited number of domains here and create reseller accounts. Customers with a corresponding reseller account can in turn create and rent out their own customer accounts.

Alternatives to a Plesk License

A Plesk license is not the only way to optimise server management. There are many Plesk alternatives available on the market. To find the best solution, users should compare the different systems.

One of the most widely known server management programs globally is cPanel. The functionality of cPanel is very similar to that of Plesk. However, cPanel can only be installed on Linux or Unix-like operating systems. But for those who do not want to run a Windows server, it's worth taking a look at the software.

LiveConfig is a web-based configuration and management software from Germany that allows you to easily manage hosting services such as web servers, email servers, and databases. It provides a user-friendly interface for managing server settings, user accounts, and domains without requiring in-depth technical knowledge.
