Country-specific or generic domain?

02-in-three-steps-to-the-right-domain-name.jpgWhen choosing the right domain name for a web project, you have a variety of options to choose from. But which domain extension is best suited for your own project? Should you opt for country-specific or generic domains? In the following article, we would like to explain the differences to help you decide on the optimal solution.

When it comes to the question of country-specific or generic domains, it refers to the so-called Top-Level-Domain (TLD). This is the domain extension after the dot in the domain name. The most well-known extension is the COM domain. This is a generic TLD (gTLD), a generic domain. The abbreviation COM stands for commercial, initially intended only for businesses on the internet, but over time it has been used for commercial offerings of all kinds and has quickly become the most popular and well-known domain extension. Currently, there are over 125 million registered COM domains. The domain extension can be ordered by anyone and used for any purpose. Other well-known generic domain extensions include the NET domain, the ORG domain, or the INFO domain.

Since every domain name is unique and can only be assigned once, it is increasingly difficult to find a good name among the classic generic domain extensions. To counteract this, since the beginning of 2014, additional generic domain extensions have been introduced under the name New Top-Level-Domains (New gTLDs). These include domain extensions such as the BLOG domain, the SHOP domain, or the WEB domain.

In addition to generic domains, there are also country-specific domain extensions. These so-called Country Code Top-Level-Domains (ccTLD) are mainly used for web projects targeting the audience in a specific country or language. The most well-known domain extension here is the DE domain. With currently over 16 million registered DE domains, it is also one of the most commonly used country-specific domain extensions worldwide. The DE extension stands for the country code Germany and can be ordered and used for any purpose by anyone with a German postal address. Other well-known Country Code Top-Level-Domains in the German-speaking region include the AT domain for Austria or the CH domain for Switzerland.

With the introduction of New Top-Level-Domains (New gTLDs) since the beginning of 2014, not only new generic domain extensions were introduced, but also domains with geographical associations. The so-called geographical Top-Level-Domains (geoTLDs) allow for even more precise regional or local assignment of a web presence than is the case with a country-specific domain. Examples of geographical Top-Level-Domains include the BERLIN domain, the BAYERN domain, or the WIEN domain.

Advantages of Country-Specific Domain Endings

The biggest advantage of country-specific domain endings is that the website can be specifically targeted towards a particular country. Especially in cases where a language is spoken in different countries, country-specific domain endings allow for the precise targeting of a specific audience. For example, if someone wants to offer products or services in Austria, they can target the Austrian market specifically using an AT domain despite using the German language on the website. The same applies internationally in English, where using a UK domain allows for specific targeting of the UK market.

Another advantage is the higher level of trust that website visitors have towards a website with a country-specific domain. When searching for products or services in Germany, people generally prefer providers who operate a website with a DE domain. Especially in online shopping, where sensitive data such as addresses or payment information needs to be shared, trust in a clearly local provider is higher than in a potentially internationally operating provider.

In addition to visitor trust, domains with a country-specific focus also receive a boost in the search engines of the respective country. This is also referred to as advantages in the field of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). When someone searches for a specific service provider in the Swiss version of Google, websites with CH domains are preferred in the search results.

Disadvantages of Country-Specific Domain Endings

However, country-specific domain extensions offer not only advantages but also a few disadvantages. The strong geographical or linguistic association with a specific country is not recommended for every business concept. For example, for those who want to target an international audience, limiting themselves with a country-specific domain extension is unnecessary. In this case, a generic domain would be more sensible.

Also, when choosing the appropriate name, one is somewhat restricted with a country-specific domain extension. Since only a single Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) is available for a specific country, the desired name may already be taken. Consequently, it may need to be acquired at a high cost or one may have to completely rethink the name.

Another limitation with country-specific domain extensions is the partially strict registration policies. For instance, a DE domain can only be registered if the customer can provide a postal address in Germany that they have constant access to. Such restrictions can be found with a variety of country-specific domains.

Advantages of generic domain extensions

Generic domain extensions are the most popular worldwide as they offer numerous advantages. Primarily, due to the variety of extensions available from the pool of generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) and New Top-Level Domains (New gTLDs), there is a large number of possible domain names to choose from. Even if the desired name is already taken under the COM domain, the numerous other domain extensions can serve as a good alternative.

Furthermore, with a generic domain extension, one is not tied to specific countries or languages and can offer their services and products to interested parties worldwide. Therefore, internationally operating companies often opt for a generic domain extension.

Additionally, the registration policies for generic domain extensions are less strict compared to some country-specific domains. Anyone, regardless of their country of origin, can register a domain with a generic extension and use it for their own web project.

Disadvantages of generic domain extensions

One of the disadvantages of generic domain extensions is that local targeting towards the audience of a specific country is somewhat more challenging. Unlike web projects with country-specific domains, there is no advantage in local search engines here, and one may not be able to rely on the basic trust that potential customers would have towards a local provider with a country-specific domain.

Conclusion

In conclusion, when deciding between a country-specific or generic domain, various criteria should be taken into account. Primarily, it depends on the individual's planned web project. Only by carefully considering the business concept and target audience can the advantages of country-specific or generic domain extensions be utilised and their disadvantages avoided. Once you have chosen the appropriate extension, perform a domain check to see if the name you desire is still available.
