The letter combination AT refers to the country code for Austria, derived from the English name of the country, Austria. The TLD was introduced on 20th January 1988 by the IANA (Internet Assigned Number Authority), with the administration being entrusted to the University of Vienna, which managed this task until 1998. Initially, the domain could be registered for free under a Second Level Domain. This included the domain extensions still available today, such as .ac.at for academic institutions, .gv.at for government and authorities, .co.at for commercial companies, and .or.at for organizations of all kinds. After the allocation guidelines were relaxed in 1997 and internet addresses could also be registered directly under the top-level domain .AT, the demand for .AT domains has steadily increased. Registration became chargeable, and the nic.at GmbH was established as the central registration authority for .AT domains. It still manages the administration of the domain extension of Austria. As a free alternative, the Second Level Domain .priv.at was introduced for private users. Currently, over one million internet addresses with the .AT domain extension have already been registered.

Allocation Guidelines for .AT Domains

If you want to register an AT domain, you should compare the prices of different domain providers beforehand. Due to different conditions, there can be noticeable price differences between providers. The top-level domain AT as well as the second-level domains .or.at and .co.at can be ordered without restrictions from the registration authority nic.at. An address of the customer in Austria is not necessary for this. The second-level domain .ac.at can only be requested for academic institutions from the Austrian Science Network ACOnet. The second-level domain .gv.at, managed by the City of Vienna on behalf of the Federal Chancellery, can only be used by authorities. The association VIBE!AT is responsible for the free allocation of the second-level domain .priv.at to Austrians. The name of the internet address can be between 3 and 63 characters long. Since 2004, German umlauts and other special characters can be included in the name. Since 2007, domain names consisting solely of numbers are also allowed for registration.
