Buy a domain: Can you buy a domain once or forever?

Anyone who needs their own internet address often looks for ways to buy a domain once or buy a domain forever. The idea is understandable: pay once and then permanently own the desired internet address.

With traditional internet domains, however, it works differently. A domain is normally not bought once and then permanently owned by the registrant. Instead, you register the domain for a set period and pay a renewal fee on a regular basis.

In short:

Buy a domain once: ❌ Normally not possible
Own a domain forever: ❌ Normally not possible
Keep a domain permanently: ✅ Yes, by renewing regularly
Automatic renewal: ✅ Available with many domain registrars

In everyday language people still usually say they "buy" a domain. Technically, however, it is more accurate to speak of a domain registration or a time-limited right of use.

Buying a domain: compare providers and prices

Even though you can't buy a domain once and for all, you can generally keep it for a very long time. The prerequisite is that you renew the registration on time. If you plan to use a domain for many years, you should therefore not only look at a low introductory price. The regular renewal fees are what's most important.

Can you buy a domain forever?

No, you normally cannot pay once for a classic domain and then keep it forever without further fees.

For example, if you register meinefirma.de, you obtain the exclusive right to use that domain for the duration of the registration period.

To continue using the domain afterwards, it must be renewed regularly.

Question Answer
Pay once for a domain and own it forever? No
Keep a domain for decades? Yes — by renewing it regularly
Pay for a domain several years in advance? Possible, depending on the domain extension and provider
Automatically renew a domain? Possible with many providers

As long as you renew your domain regularly and pay the associated fees, you can use it practically indefinitely.

Why can't you buy a domain once and for all?

A domain is not a conventional object that is sold once and then permanently transferred.

The Domain Name System is managed by different organisations. Depending on the domain extension, different registries are responsible for allocation and management.

A domain provider, or registrar, handles the registration and renewal of your chosen internet address on your behalf.

Put simply, it works like this:

Domain owner

Domain provider / Registrar

Registry of the respective top-level domain

Domain Name System

The domain is therefore not bought like a physical object, but registered for the respective owner.

To keep the registration active, administrative and registry fees continue to apply. These are covered by the regular domain charges.

Can you pay for a domain once?

A permanent one-off payment for a standard domain is generally not available.

With some top-level domains and providers, however, you can register or pay for a domain for several years in advance.

But that does not mean you own it forever. Once the prepaid period has expired, the registration must be renewed.

Example:

You register a domain for several years in advance. During that period you do not need to deal with the payment each year. However, once the registration period expires, the domain must be renewed if you want to continue using it.

Buying a domain or renting one – which is correct?

In everyday usage the term 'buying a domain' has become established. Domain providers also frequently use this phrasing.

Technically, however, it is not entirely precise.

A domain is more:

  • registered
  • used for a defined period
  • renewed regularly

For that reason, domains are sometimes described as being 'rented'.

This comparison is also not completely accurate. A domain registration is not a conventional tenancy. It is more accurate to describe it as a time-limited and exclusive right to use.

Term Meaning
Buy a domain Common term for registering a domain
Rent a domain Simplified comparison for the recurring fees
Register a domain Technically more precise term

How can I keep a domain permanently?

Although a domain cannot be 'bought forever', you can easily use it long‑term.

To prevent an important domain from being unintentionally lost, you should bear a few points in mind.

Enable automatic renewal

With many providers, a domain is automatically renewed as long as you do not cancel the contract.

This is particularly useful if the domain is used long‑term for a website, a business, or email addresses.

Keep payment details up to date

Automatic renewal only helps if the stored payment method remains valid.

If, for example, your credit card or bank account changes, you should update the details with the provider.

Use a current contact address

Domain providers normally notify you in good time about renewals, payment issues or other important changes.

Therefore, the contact email address registered with the provider should be permanently reachable.

Check renewal costs

Anyone who wants to keep a domain for many years should check before registration what ongoing costs will arise.

A cheap introductory price is less important in the long term than the regular renewal price.

Why the renewal price is more important than the purchase price

Many domain deals advertise very low prices for the first year.

A domain can, for example, cost only a few cents or a few euros initially. However, from the second year onwards a significantly higher regular price often applies.

If you want to keep a domain long-term, the total costs over several years are therefore decisive.

Price For long-term use
Promotional price in the first year Less important
Regular renewal price Very important
Costs over 5 or 10 years Particularly meaningful
For a domain that you want to keep long-term, the following applies:

It's not the cheapest price in the first year that matters, but the question, how much the domain actually costs over several years.

What happens if I don't renew my domain?

If a domain is not renewed, the registration will eventually expire.

What happens afterwards depends, among other things, on the domain extension and the rules of the responsible registry.

Depending on the domain there may initially be grace or redemption periods. After these expire the domain can eventually become available for other interested parties.

This can be especially problematic for company and trademark domains.

If an important domain becomes available, it could be registered by someone else. Therefore business-critical domains should always be renewed in good time.

Can someone buy my domain if it expires?

In some cases, yes.

If your registration has fully expired and the domain has been released, it can generally be registered by someone else.

Attractive domains are often monitored closely.

If you want to use a domain long-term, you should therefore avoid it expiring in the first place.

What is the difference between an available and an already registered domain?

When searching for a domain, there are two fundamentally different situations.

Register an available domain

If the desired domain is still available, you can register it directly with a domain provider.

This normally incurs regular registration or renewal fees.

Buy an already registered domain

If the desired domain is already registered, a conventional purchase can take place.

The current owner can transfer their rights to the domain in return for a one-off purchase price.

This is possible, for example, on domain marketplaces or through direct contact with the previous owner.

Important: Even if you buy an already registered domain from its previous owner, the normal renewal fees at the domain provider will still apply afterwards.

The one-off purchase price for an already registered domain therefore does not replace the ongoing registration costs.

Securing a domain for a business long-term

A domain can have significant commercial value for businesses.

It is often used for several purposes at the same time:

  • Company website
  • Online shop
  • Email addresses
  • Customer portals
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Redirects

Losing the domain can therefore have serious consequences.

For important company domains, it is advisable to ensure automatic renewal, up-to-date payment details and reliable contact information.

Buy a domain with or without web hosting?

You can register a domain on its own or together with a web hosting package.

Which option is more suitable depends on what you want to do with the domain.

Purpose Suitable solution
Secure domain only Domain-only plan
Domain and your own email address Email hosting with domain
Domain and website Web hosting with domain
Domain and WordPress Web hosting or WordPress hosting

If you want to run a website right away, you can compare suitable offers in our Web hosting comparison.

Frequently asked questions about buying a domain

Can you buy a domain forever?

No. A typical internet domain is usually not bought once and then owned permanently. It is registered for a specific period and must be renewed regularly.

Can you buy a domain with a one-off payment?

An available domain usually cannot be purchased permanently with a single payment. Depending on the domain extension and provider, however, it is often possible to pay for several years in advance.

Why do I have to pay for my domain every year?

There are ongoing costs for registering and managing a domain charged by registrars and registries. Therefore regular fees are levied for long-term use.

Can I still keep my domain forever?

Practically yes. As long as you renew the domain regularly and pay the fees, you can generally use it indefinitely.

Can I pay for a domain several years in advance?

Depending on the domain extension and provider, registration or prepayment for several years is possible. After that the domain must be renewed.

Is a domain bought or rented?

Both terms are simplifications. In everyday use people usually say “buy a domain”. Technically more precise is the registration of a domain with a time-limited exclusive right of use.

What happens if I don't renew my domain?

The domain expires after a set period. Depending on the domain extension there may first be a grace or redemption period. After that the domain can become available again to other interested parties.

Can I really buy a domain that's already registered?

Yes. The current domain owner can transfer their rights to a registered domain for a one-off purchase price. However, after the transfer you will still have to pay the regular renewal fees.

How much does a domain cost in the long term?

Costs depend on the domain extension and the provider. For long-term use you should above all compare the regular renewal price, not just a cheap promotional price in the first year.

Buying a domain and keeping it affordable long-term

It is usually not possible to buy a domain once and keep it forever for classic internet domains. Instead you register your desired domain for a set period and renew it regularly.

In practice this is hardly a disadvantage: with automatic renewal you can use a domain for many years or decades.

What matters less is whether a domain can be bought once; more important is what ongoing costs you will incur in the long term.

In our comparison you can compare different providers and domain prices and find a plan that remains attractive even for long-term use.
