.ltd as a Representative Legal Form Suffix Domain

The .ltd domain is a generic top-level domain for entrepreneurs and founders from various countries using the English Limited as their legal form. On 22nd June 2016, the new TLD was officially released on the same day as the .gmbh domain. The allocation rights were granted by the Internet organisation ICANN to the US giant Donuts Inc., which has submitted over 300 applications including .immo or .today, making it by far the largest registry of nTLDs ahead of Google and Amazon. Just over a year after the launch of the .ltd business domain, around 150,000 company websites with this abbreviation were found on the internet in October 2017. This makes the corporate domain, following .shop or .club, one of the most successful new top-level domains.

Is it possible for individuals to register a .ltd business domain?

Yes, this domain extension can be registered not only by companies but also by legally capable individuals. The minimum term is one year. The annual fee is usually invoiced in advance. Registering a domain with the .ltd abbreviation is possible in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, German, and other languages. The desired domain must not contain umlauts and addresses consisting solely of digits. The nTLD must be at least 1 and can be up to 63 characters long. Hyphens are allowed, but they cannot be at the beginning and end or in the third and fourth positions, such as 123-company.ltd.

Why is it worth registering a .ltd extension?

The British legal form Limited is widely used, especially in English-speaking countries, but is also very popular among German founders due to the low initial capital and the absence of the obligation of notarial certification compared to GmbH. With the new .ltd extension, there is now the opportunity to be found by internet users under a web address like www.firmaxy.ltd instead of www.firmaxy.ltd.com. This makes the web address shorter and more memorable. The .ltd top-level domain is likely to be of interest to those whose company name is already taken under .com or country codes like .de, .ch, or .at.

Advantages of the new .ltd gTLD:

  • Enhanced presentation of a Limited company on the internet
  • Customers and clients can immediately associate the website with the legal form
  • Short and concise web address as an important factor in marketing
  • Web and email addresses with .ltd inspire more trust

Are there any other legal form top-level domains?

Another option is the .gmbh domain extension, which is exclusively intended for companies with the legal form of a GmbH. The same applies to the .srl domain, the Italian equivalent of a limited liability company. For companies with the legal form addition INC, there will soon be the legal form domain .inc. Some joint-stock companies use the abbreviation .ag, which is essentially the country domain extension for the Caribbean countries Antigua and Barbuda, but is also used in Germany to highlight an AG on the internet.
