The .li domain is a country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of the landlocked country of Liechtenstein. The domain extension of the principality was officially launched on 26th February 1993. The domain name registry is the SWITCH Foundation, which also manages the country domain of Switzerland with .ch. The sale of domain names is handled by various registrars, which can be viewed at www.nic.li. As of 30th June 2017, around 62,500 domain addresses have been registered through reseller partners since its introduction.

Is a presence in Liechtenstein required for a .li extension?

No. The country domain can be registered by any individual or company, regardless of their place of residence or nationality, without the need for a local administrative contact (Admin-C). The domain name can be between 3 and 63 characters long. The use of umlauts has been possible since 2003. This made the Liechtenstein principality domain one of the first country domains in Europe to allow domain addresses like www.ölkühler.li or www.schwiizertüütsch.li long before Germany (since 2010). Hyphens are also allowed, except at the beginning and end, and when placed consecutively in the third and fourth positions. Registration of a .li top-level domain is possible in four national languages: German, English, Italian, and French.
