.EU Domain Price Comparison | Compare Costs of EU Domain

The domain extension EU was introduced as a country-code top-level domain for the European Union. You can find the prices of individual EU domain providers in our overview.

The European Parliament and the European Council decided on April 22, 2002, in a regulation to introduce a dedicated top-level domain for the European Union. After the Belgian company EURid was established for this purpose and the technical infrastructure was prepared, the EU top-level domain was launched on April 28, 2005. In the first registration phase, owners of a registered trademark were allowed to secure the corresponding domain name first. In the second registration phase, natural persons, legal entities, and registered companies could register their desired addresses before the domain was ultimately available to everyone. Since January 2014, not only residents of the European Union can order an EU domain, but also individuals from the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Currently, a total of 3.7 million EU domains are registered, making the domain extension one of the ten most commonly registered top-level domains worldwide.

Allocation Policies of EU Domains

The operational and technical management of the EU Domain is carried out by EURid. The name of the non-profit organization based in Belgium is an acronym for European Registry of Internet Domain Names. EURid was specifically established for the purpose of domain management and was able to secure the administration of the EU Top-Level Domain in a European tender process against all other applicants. The domain names of EU Domains can be between 2 and 63 characters long. All German umlauts as well as numerous other special characters from the various languages of European countries are supported. Hyphens are also allowed if they are not in the first or last position. To register with one of the EU Domain providers from our comparison, an address in one of the European Union member states or in a European Free Trade Association country is mandatory. Therefore, individuals from Switzerland can only register EU Domains with the help of a trustee. Most EU Domain providers offer this service, but it results in higher registration prices. EU Domains from providers in our comparison are extremely popular, especially among companies with locations in the European Union. Website operators who want to express their connection to the European Union or offer web content in multiple languages of European countries often opt for the EU Top-Level Domain.

Alternatives to the .eu Domain

For online projects in German targeting an audience in Germany, the .de Domain is usually preferred. The same applies to the .at Domain targeting Austria, the .ch Domain targeting Switzerland, or the .li Domain targeting Liechtenstein.
