What is meant by a Cloud Server?

What distinguishes a Cloud Server from a conventional server?

A Cloud Server is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) that provides a flexible IT infrastructure which can be precisely scaled to meet a customer's requirements. In many respects, a Cloud Server combines the features of a virtual server with dynamic adjustment, where resources are supplied and supplemented or released in real-time according to demand. Some providers allow additional virtual hardware such as firewalls, switches, or load balancers to be added as needed. As a result, Cloud Servers, in conjunction with other services, create a highly efficient and extremely adaptable IT environment. They can be seamlessly integrated into different environments and complement them without issues such as operating system migration or new hardware installation. A variety of Linux distributions as well as the proprietary OS Microsoft Windows are available and can be used simultaneously.

How much does hosting on a Cloud Server cost?

Cloud providers utilise different pricing models, which are either based on traditional Virtual Private Servers or a usage-based model. In the first case, monthly rental fees are charged for virtualised hardware that has been reserved permanently for the respective Cloud Server. In the second case, fees are calculated precisely according to actual consumption of storage and processing resources as well as traffic. Consequently, providers offer Cloud Servers from as little as £0, but they charge for the resources used. These costs are only a few pounds for basic load on the operating system but can quickly add up during high utilisation. To maintain cost control, limits can be set on processing speed and storage capacities. Alternatively, packages are available that, similar to a virtual server, secure a certain minimum hardware capacity continuously. During peak times or seasonal promotions, these are either planned or supplemented in real-time with additional resources to ensure optimal availability at all times.

Prices also vary depending on the hardware used. Whether faster SSD drives or a Managed Cloud Server are employed. the corresponding costs increase.

Do Cloud Servers have specific advantages and disadvantages?

Advantages:

  • Very flexible infrastructure with numerous options for expansion
  • Choice among various operating systems
  • Pay-as-you-go billing possible
  • Root access and free installation of additional software
  • Combination with other virtual hardware such as switches or firewalls
  • Scalable in real time
  • Permanent availability and automatic adjustment to demand

Disadvantages:

  • No dedicated hardware
  • No fixed costs with usage-based billing
  • Limited compatibility when migrating to virtual and dedicated servers
  • Frequent attacks by cybercriminals
  • Different conditions for data security

What are the alternatives to a Cloud Server?

Especially for mission-critical processes and confidential data, using a virtual or dedicated server offers advantages. With long-term contracts, these also have higher cost control. VPS also offer scalability that only falls short of a Cloud Server in a few aspects. Running a website solely through a web hosting provider is usually cheaper and relieves the operator from technical tasks such as securing, installing updates, or configuring and optimising the system. Cloud Servers primarily offer significant benefits for temporary use in compute-intensive processes, such as specialised environments for software development. Due to relatively high prices for data storage, they are only conditionally recommended as file servers. Here, specialised hosting providers and cloud applications are more suitable.
