Alternatives to .com - what are the advantages of registering a .biz domain?

By registering a domain with the extension .biz, customers acquire a prestigious internet address that offers specific advantages over various alternatives outside of web hosting. The management of the generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) is carried out by the company Neulevel, which in turn was almost entirely owned by the US-based information systems and communications specialist NeuStar and has been part of the well-known domain host GoDaddy since 2020. A unique feature of .biz is that, following a relaxation of the allocation policies, the restriction to a minimum of three characters was lifted.

What is the idea behind the .biz domain?

When the first Top Level Domains (TLD) were introduced, the authorities assumed a low demand for addresses, mainly for science, government agencies, and a few companies - with the rapid development of the internet, this forecast quickly proved to be inaccurate. The introduction of the .biz domain in 2001 was one of the earliest attempts to expand the available namespace with a new generic TLD and was intended to complement and expand the already highly sought-after .com address as a phonetic representation for business.

In its early years, the new .biz domain experienced rapid growth, which, however, declined with the introduction of additional gTLDs and specifically the sponsored Top Level Domains (sTLD) proposed and managed by an organization. Consequently, despite a similar approach, .biz could not establish itself in the public perception as a suitable extension of .com because increasingly, alternatives with regional or thematic relevance emerged. In 2009, StarLevel then made a change to the allocation policy - since then, .biz is one of the few TLDs that allow addresses with two or even a single letter to be registered. The majority of them were auctioned by the registrar in a spectacular auction to the highest bidder.

What should be considered when registering a .biz domain?

Unlike many country-specific internet domains, the .biz domain does not require any specific qualifications from an applicant and can be registered through numerous web hosts without any proof or formalities. Although the name suggests commercial use, Neulevel and GoDaddy, as responsible registrars, do not enforce this requirement. In a price comparison with other gTLDs and ccTLDs, .biz appears to be cost-effective, similar to many regional or universal extensions. Due to the evolution of the domain system, it has never gained the same popularity and widespread use as previous alternatives - such as .de, .com, or .info - making it possible to find some available and attractive domain names.

What are the characteristics of a .biz address?

Although it is a generic TLD, .biz is largely unspecific in practical use and legal requirements. This is mainly due to a widespread liberalization of the registration policy within the first ten years of its introduction, in response to the gradual expansion of domain extensions. The current features mainly include:

  • High availability and no formal requirements for registration
  • Open for commercial, private, or public use
  • Clear association of the extension with commercial presence
  • Low distribution allowing for many attractive available domain names
  • Possibility to register in annual intervals ranging from 12 months to 10 years
  • Cost-effective in international price comparison
  • Price stability over a long period of more than a decade

What are the alternatives to a .biz domain?

In a direct price comparison, the .biz domain is fully competitive - the monthly expenses for registration amount to a few euros per month outside of discounts, placing it at a similar level to alternatives like the ccTLD .de, .eu, and .at, as well as affordable gTLDs and sTLDs. Only the slightly more expensive .com and the often significantly pricier sTLDs with industry-specific relevance appear in terms of reach, global presence, and association, but they come with drawbacks such as high renewal fees or limited available addresses.
