Start tenderFor a long time, Intel® was considered the unrivalled market leader for servers - the majority of data centres and companies consistently relied on processors from the Xeon® series or Pentium® and Celeron® CPUs for Intel® Dedicated Servers. Often, other high-quality and mission-critical hardware such as memory, network cards, motherboards, or even entire systems also came from the renowned manufacturer, which, like its competitor AMD, is headquartered in Santa Clara in the Californian Silicon Valley.
Due to its high market presence and diverse range, comparing providers is crucial before customers rent an Intel® Dedicated Server. After all, there is a wide selection of hardware available, which can come from multiple generations with different strengths and weaknesses. Not all web hosts provide precise specifications of their Intel® servers - especially in web hosting, this is rarely the norm as the allocation to specific hardware is usually done automatically by software. However, this is different, for example, with a dedicated Dedicated Server that customers rent exclusively for individual use.
The term Intel® server almost exclusively refers to the processor. For conventional web hosting, this information is not very informative, as other factors such as the number of users, hardware utilization, or the bandwidth of the connection to IT nodes determine the performance and Server Response Time (SRT). However, when renting a dedicated or virtual Root Server, users directly benefit from more powerful hardware. The crucial features of an Intel® server include:
Many web hosts offer rentals of Intel® servers that may seem very similar at first glance, but have significant differences in important details or contract terms. This is evident, for example, in the hardware generation: it is common for many web hosts to offer older models as cost-effective Intel® Dedicated Servers. These servers have lower energy efficiency and typically consume less power as dedicated servers compared to systems for cloud services.
A comparison should also consider the use of an Intel® server. A web server with moderate usage and non-optimized configuration, for instance, may not benefit much from the advantages of current hardware. However, for an office server with workstation virtualization for multiple thin clients or a PaaS environment for software development, modern hardware is almost indispensable as these tasks inevitably require occasional higher peak performance. In such scenarios, any additional costs for modern systems quickly pay off, while in other situations, they may not provide significant benefits. Particularly in markets for used Intel® Dedicated Servers, there are sometimes cost-effective offers to rent highly specialized but now discontinued servers at very low prices. These should not be overlooked when making the ideal choice.
