The domain extension NET is the second most commonly registered generic top-level domain on the Internet, following the COM domain. You can find the exact prices of all NET domain providers in our clear comparison.
The abbreviation NET stands for "network", which is the English term for "network". Originally, the domain extension was intended only for Internet service providers.
However, this restriction was later lifted. NET domains from our provider comparison have been available for anyone to order for quite some time. With more than 15 million registered NET domains, this domain extension is the second most common generic top-level domain and ranks third in terms of registrations worldwide, following the COM domain and DE domain. The NET domain was introduced on 1st January 1985, and the very first domain ever assigned on the Internet was the address nordu.net. This domain belongs to the association of national computer networks for research and science from various Northern European countries. The website is still accessible today.
Allocation Policies of COM Domains
The company Verisign from the USA, which also manages the COM domains, is responsible for the allocation of NET domains. As with the most well-known Top-Level-Domain, there are no special restrictions for obtaining NET domains. All alphanumeric combinations between 2 and 63 characters are possible. Hyphens can also be used, as long as they do not appear at the beginning or end. Special characters like German umlauts are allowed, but not the Eszett. Both natural persons and legal entities can use the domain extension for any legal purpose. Registration is typically for a whole year, and since prices are not fixed, there may be differences between individual NET domain providers. It is advisable to compare the prices of providers carefully to potentially save on domain costs. NET domains automatically renew for another year if no cancellation is made. Before the domains are permanently deleted, there is a Redemption Grace Period, similar to the COM domain, during which the domain can be recovered within 30 days.
Due to its high popularity and recognition, a NET domain is an excellent alternative to the COM domain if the desired name is already taken. Especially for businesses or web projects in the international market, a NET domain from our provider comparison is a very good choice. For online projects in the German language targeting a German-speaking audience, the DE domain is typically preferred.
