What is a Rocky Linux VPS Hosting?

The distribution Rocky Linux emerged as a response to the announcement by the developer company Red Hat to end support for the CentOS operating system by the end of 2021. The project founder of CentOS, Gregory Kurtzer, then decided to start another project that would produce an operating system fully binary-compatible with Red Hat's commercial distribution (RHEL).

The advantage of Rocky Linux is that it is completely open source and available free of charge. The development is supported by a community of software designers under the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF).

Many web hosting providers now offer their customers VPS Hosting with a pre-installed Rocky Linux software environment. This allows customers to benefit from the advantages of the former enterprise version CentOS. Since RESF does not charge any license fees, a virtual machine based on Rocky Linux can be implemented very cost-effectively.

How does a VPS Hosting work?

With the server virtualization, it is possible to run different virtual hardware environments on a single hard drive. For this, the operating system requires a hypervisor, which divides the available hard drive space into separate partitions. There are two types of hypervisors to distinguish between.

Of importance for web hosting is type 1, the so-called Bare-Metal Hypervisor. This software is installed directly at the hardware level, allowing it to have access to all device resources such as RAM, storage space, or CPU power. It allocates these resources to the different virtual machines according to the admin configurations.

The individual VMs have the operating systems installed, which simultaneously provide the software environment for additional applications.

Rocky Linux VPS Hosting has several advantages compared to similar products.

  • Low Costs: VPS Hosting is very cost-effective compared to dedicated servers. Customers pay less for the respective plans. Additionally, Rocky Linux is freely licensed.
  • Professional Linux Environment: Rocky Linux has evolved from the discontinued CentOS project, providing developers with the expertise of Red Hat Inc.
  • No Maintenance Effort for the Base System: The hardware is maintained and configured by the hosting provider. However, customers have full creative freedom within their virtual hardware environment.

A VPS Hosting on Linux basis can have disadvantages, so some projects may be better implemented with other solutions.

  • No root access: When booking a virtual server, the customer does not have root access to the base system. For more complex projects, a Dedicated Server would be the better choice.
  • Software compatibility: The most popular operating system worldwide is Microsoft Windows. As a result, most apps are compatible with Windows. Some programs do not support Linux at all or only in older versions.

Rocky Linux VPS Hosting as a Web Hosting Product

Most web hosting providers offer their customers VPS Hosting with pre-installed software environments. Linux is a popular operating system because most distributions are distributed under a GPL license, which means no additional fees are incurred.

As an unofficial successor to CentOS, Rocky Linux inherits some of the predecessor's advantages appreciated by the community. It is extremely stable, open source, and binary compatible with the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Alternatives to Rocky Linux VPS Hosting

For specific projects, it can be beneficial to operate a Windows Server. This is particularly relevant when essential software is not supported by Linux. Additionally, Windows receives professional support from the manufacturer, Microsoft.

On a Linux basis, an Ubuntu VPS Hosting is also a good alternative. The operating system is a development of Debian and is much more user-friendly than the core distribution. Ubuntu by Canonical is considered very stable and secure.

Following the end of CentOS, AlmaLinux was announced as a binary-compatible successor to RHEL. It is also a free, open-source operating system. Whether Rocky or AlmaLinux will ultimately establish itself as the successor to CentOS remains to be seen.
