The .uk domain is a country-code top-level domain representing the United Kingdom, which includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Prior to the UK's exit from the European Union and the end of the official transition period at New Year 2021, the .uk domain was subject to EU regulations, allowing registration by any EU citizen without regional restrictions. Since then, the legal situation has been somewhat unclear, but the existing regulations are largely accepted as the standard by both the EU and the UK as the United Kingdom.
What are the special features of the .uk domain?
Aside from being a country-code top-level domain for the United Kingdom, the .uk domain has some additional characteristics. The regulatory authority has divided it into several industry- or theme-specific subdomains, including:
- .co.uk domains for commercial interests
- .org.uk domains for private or public organisations
- .me.uk domains for personal websites
- .ltd.uk domains for companies registered as Limited Companies (similar to the German GmbH)
- Specialised .uk domains for police, government, schools, and other governmental institutions
Initially, it was not possible to register a .uk domain directly as a Second Level Domain like example.uk. This changed in 2014, with existing third-level domain owners having a preferential right, which has since expired. The priorities of individual domains may change over time - initially, the non-profit organisation Nominet, which regulates policies and organises allocations, imposed strict restrictions on .org.uk or .com.uk domains, while paying little attention to domains like .me.uk. Currently, com and org domains are open for all uses, while .me.uk is restricted to natural persons, sporadically monitored, and registrations not meeting the purpose have been revoked from several companies.
Is it possible to freely register a .uk domain?
Generally, registering a .uk domain is open without any control or proof, unless it has been reserved for specific purposes (such as .nhs.uk for healthcare) and a domain check in the database does not identify any active owners. Almost all international web providers offer the .uk domain, as well as the variants .co.uk and .org.uk, along with another country-specific domain extension - all three versions are similarly popular and considered equivalent. The previously widespread .me.uk in the EU now also requires a fixed address in the UK for personal, individual use, which some providers offer as a trustee during registration.
What problems and risks does a .uk domain pose?
Overall, the risks associated with .uk domains can be considered very low with proper use - however, cases have arisen in connection with Brexit where owners of a .uk or .eu domain had them revoked because they did not have residency in the relevant region and did not meet the requirements for a country-specific domain extension. These difficulties are considered resolved, and exceptions aside, no medium- or long-term problems are expected after a successful registration. It is important to note that .me.uk domains are now subject to relatively strict control regarding thematic content and residency.
