With over 100 million registered addresses, the Top-Level Domain COM is by far the most widely used domain extension worldwide. We have put together a clear comparison of prices from COM domain providers for you.
The domain extension COM is classified as one of the so-called generic Top-Level Domains. The extension does not represent a specific country but in this case stands for the term "commercial", which translates from English to mean "business". Originally, the domain extension was intended only for companies, but this restriction was later lifted, allowing anyone to register a COM domain with one of the providers in our comparison. The domain was introduced on January 1, 1985, with the first domain name being the address symbolics.com of the eponymous company from the USA. As the COM extension can be used in a highly versatile manner, the Top-Level Domain has become the most popular domain extension. Short and memorable addresses with a COM extension are hardly available anymore, making domains a valuable commodity. COM domains with well-known and popular terms regularly fetch millions of dollars at auctions. The absolute record holder is the domain sex.com, which changed hands for a whopping 13 million USD in November 2010.
Allocation Policies of COM Domains
For the allocation of .COM domains, the US company Verisign is responsible. There are no strict allocation guidelines for registering a .COM domain. Any natural or legal person can become the owner of a .COM domain and use it for any purpose, as long as it is within the legal framework. Domain names can be between 2 and 63 characters long. German umlauts are allowed, but not the Eszett. Hyphens can also be used, as long as they do not appear at the very beginning or end. Since the domain costs for a .COM domain vary among different providers, it is worth comparing prices. Registration is usually for one year and automatically renews. If the registration is not renewed, the domain enters a 30-day Redemption Grace Period before being permanently deleted. This prevents accidental deletions, as the owner can still renew the domain during this time.
Due to the high popularity of the domain extension, investing in a .COM domain can be worthwhile. Especially for web projects with an international focus, the affordable .COM domains from the providers in our comparison are well suited.
Alternatives to the .com Domain
The .com domain is always the first choice for international web projects. However, since most domain names are already taken, alternatives to the .com domain such as the .net domain, .org domain, or .info domain are often used. For online projects in German targeting a German-speaking audience, the .de domain is usually preferred.
