External Domain with Web Hosting - What are the Pros and Cons?

In many situations, connecting an external domain with separate web hosting can offer significant advantages. One of the most important reasons for such an approach is certainly to minimize ongoing costs. Some companies focus either on their role as cheap domain providers and offer a variety of different Top Level Domains (TLDs) at excellent conditions. Others see their primary task as web hosting providers for a secure, affordable, and user-friendly infrastructure. An external domain allows for maximum flexibility with these providers, especially since the extra work for integration into web hosting is usually manageable.

How are an external domain and web hosting connected?

Basically, there is no obligation for a domain provider and a web hosting provider to be identical: Internet addresses are considered an intangible asset from a legal perspective, over which the owner has free disposal and can also engage in trade. The rights to transfer, sell, or the type of technical support can be restricted by the administrator - the registrar responsible for registration - but the web hosting provider cannot impose or demand a fixed commitment to itself. Rather, upon written request from the owner, they must provide a so-called transfer or auth code, enabling a transfer to another domain provider.

Can an external domain be used with any web hosting?

An internet address is generally not tied to a fixed location for web hosting, with few exceptions such as certain country- or topic-specific extensions. Requirements - if they exist at all - mostly relate to usage, the owner's region or recipients, or content and must be met almost exclusively during registration. For this reason, there are no objections to using web hosting for an external domain with any company.

The technical infrastructure - in other words, the web hosting - is separate from owning a domain. The management and assignment of an external domain to a specific server is handled by the independently operating Domain Name System (DNS) and can be done by the domain provider, the web hosting provider, or by another provider or using your own nameservers. In theory, a web hosting provider can, however, prohibit its customers from using an external domain and block corresponding requests through its terms and conditions - but this is not common practice among reputable companies.

What are the advantages of using an external domain for web hosting?

Many web hosting providers offer packages to their customers that include a domain from a limited selection of TLDs. However, the costs for additional addresses or those with alternative extensions are often higher than those incurred with a specialized domain provider. But not solely for this reason, an external domain offers several advantages that make it appealing:

  • Wide selection of available TLD extensions
  • Often lower costs compared to combined packages of domain and web hosting
  • Extensive possibilities to use multiple addresses for a website
  • Clear management of multiple addresses for a presence or different purposes
  • Greater flexibility by freely choosing web hosting and domain providers
  • More alternatives when setting up the responsible nameservers
  • Easy and straightforward migration from one web hosting to another

Specifically, companies that use multiple internet addresses and centrally manage them mostly opt for web hosting that utilizes an external domain. This separation proves to be optimal for minimizing costs and achieving maximum flexibility in terms of possible TLDs and the combination of multiple addresses for a target page. Conversely, for a purely private, small website, conducting a domain check enables finding a suitable and attractive desired address independently from web hosting to register and use.
