Start tenderThe .nl Domain stands as an abbreviation for the Netherlands - it is therefore one of the country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) created in the early stages of global network development, which has been under the administration of the respective state since its introduction. Compared to alternatives like other ccTLDs - such as the .de Domain - as well as among all available TLDs, .nl Domains have a very high prevalence. They can be registered worldwide through all major domain registrars, provided that the buyer meets some basic requirements.
As early as 1986, the government of the Netherlands delegated the task of managing and maintaining the technical infrastructure as one of the first TLDs worldwide to an external institute outside the USA - the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, headquartered in Amsterdam. Due to the increasing importance of domain names in general and the growing administrative tasks, the Netherlands transferred the management to the Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland (SIDN) in 1996, which, among other things, provides an extensive database of court decisions regarding domain allocation on domjur.nl.
Although it does not have an additional layer of interpretation like, for example, the .it Domain or .es Domain as a proper noun, the .tv Domain from Tuvalu or the .fm Domain from Micronesia as industry-specific addresses, or the Belarusian .by Domain as a regional reference to Bavaria, the .nl Domain possesses an exceptionally high level of popularity. It ranks among the top five most popular ccTLDs in the world along with the Chinese .cn Domain, the German .de Domain, and the British .uk Domain. One reason for this is that the Netherlands has one of the highest rates of registering private internet addresses worldwide. Currently, more than 6.2 million addresses have been assigned with a .nl extension. (As of September 2021)
Technically, the .nl Domain is similar to the requirements of most ccTLDs in industrialized countries, which essentially include the following conditions:
Additionally, there is a popular Second Level Domain .co.nl, appreciated by companies and commercial projects. However, SIDN explicitly emphasizes that this offer is provided by a private service provider and does not have a direct connection with the official .nl domain.
Until 2009, the .nl domain was exclusively reserved for legal entities and natural persons who could prove a residence or establishment in the country - since 2009, the Netherlands have largely liberalized their process. For foreigners, SIDN even offers a service where foreigners can use the company's postal address to register a .nl domain. Unlike, for example, the .de domain or the .fr domain, there are practically no restrictive requirements anymore, such as requiring a residence within the EU.
Compared to other TLDs, the .nl domain is very affordable - this applies both in comparison with other ccTLDs and with the new nTLDs - such as the .online domain, .shop domain, or .website domain. Furthermore, many domain retailers do not charge additional fees for renewal of the address after 12 months. However, there are some attractive alternatives to the .nl domain - such as the first-phase generic TLDs like the .com domain and .org domain, as well as regional extensions like the .eu domain. Another option for commercial websites is the .co.nl domain, which has no registration requirements. It offers more attractive available domain addresses but is slightly more costly.
