Forums have been used as platforms for discussions and information exchange among people with similar interests since the early days of the internet. Forums can provide a space for experts to discuss their field or for general discussions on various topics.
Find out here what options are available to create your own forum and what web hosting is needed for forums:
Why are Forums so Popular?
Despite the vast number of websites and large social networks, community forums are still well-visited and highly popular among many internet users. Reasons for this include the clear discussion structure and asynchronous communication. Users do not have to respond immediately to a topic created; they can join the discussion later without losing track. Moreover, on the internet, one can now find a forum for almost any niche topic, where like-minded individuals gather. The diversity ranges from travel forums for discussions on distant lands, to cooking and DIY forums for sharing tips and advice, to very specific niche forums for fans of particular car models or owners of specific dog breeds.
- Clear discussion structure
- Time-delayed communication allows participation later without losing information
- Wide range of topics: From general to very specific interests
- Sense of community through exchange with like-minded people
- Possibility to have in-depth discussions and ask detailed questions
Finding the Right Hosting for Your Own Forum
Many internet users wish to build and manage their own forum. The reasons for this are numerous. Perhaps there is no suitable forum for the chosen topic yet, or the topic does not have a platform where it can be extensively discussed. Often, it also makes sense to open a separate forum for a specific subtopic to be able to discuss it in more detail. Making your own project better and more successful than the competition can also be a strong incentive.
Basically, there are two ways to realize your own forum. Either you rely on the comprehensive service of a specialized provider who takes care of the complete forum hosting, or you take control yourself by finding your own web hosting and installing appropriate forum software. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages.
Forum Hosting Providers
The easiest option is to use the service of a forum hosting provider. Nowadays, you can find numerous offers on the internet. Companies like Forumprofi or Xobor provide a complete software as a service that can be used to set up a forum. In this case, forum owners do not have to worry about the technical aspects such as server management, software installation, and regular updates, but can focus entirely on the forum itself. This option is particularly recommended for beginners without expertise in this area. The forums are usually pre-configured and can be customized by the customer using design templates. Since these offers are usually financed through advertising, completely free plans are also available. Of course, the forum owner does not have much influence on the configuration, especially in terms of customization or implementing special requests, one is rather limited with this forum option. Also, for large communities with several thousand members, the performance of such offers is usually not sufficient.
Advantages:
- Easy to use
- No technical knowledge required
- Free entry-level tariffs
Disadvantages:
- Limitations in configuration
- Often display advertisements
- Not suitable for large communities
Own Forum Hosting
The professional alternative to forum hosting providers is to realize a self-hosted forum. To do this, first, web hosting with sufficient performance is required. In the next step, the forum operator must decide on forum software. There are products available from various forum software providers. There are significant differences between the solutions. While some forum applications can be used for free as open-source software, others incur license costs for using proprietary software. Since all steps from installation to configuration of the forum are carried out by the forum operator, all individual settings can be implemented exactly according to their own requirements. Depending on the chosen web hosting, it is also possible to manage large communities in this way. There are no limits for the operators.
Advantages:
- Full control over webspace and forum software
- Custom configuration possible
- Suitable for extensive and professional communities
Disadvantages:
- Technical knowledge required
- Higher administrative effort
- Costs for web hosting and possibly license fees for forum software
Technical Requirements of a Self-Hosted Forum
Depending on the forum software used and the planned size of the community, the requirements for web hosting vary. To operate the forum software, support for dynamic web content is essential. Therefore, the web hosting should support the scripting language PHP. Additionally, access to a database must be available. Typically, all forum applications work well with a MySQL database, some are also compatible with systems like SQLite or Microsoft SQL. Since the need for storage space quickly increases with each new user and each posted contribution, it should definitely be several GB from the start. While for small and medium-sized forums, cheap web hosting is usually sufficient in terms of performance, for larger communities with several thousand members and hundreds of new posts every day, a powerful CMS web hosting should be used.
